REPORTER IN THE FIELD

I’m grateful for grants and awards to travel around the world to report on stories at the intersection of food security, land use, and climate change. In 2016, with funding from the Alicia Patterson Foundation, I went to mainland Malaysia for a two-week wild banana collection trip, followed by a visit to the Crops for the Future research institute outside Kuala Lumpur. I also traveled to Iceland to attend an Arctic Circle meeting and explore the shifting agricultural opportunities there, including diverse livestock farms and greenhouse operations. With a grant from the Society of Environmental Journalists, I traveled from the Amazon to the Andes in 2018, reporting on efforts to save Peru’s agricultural heritage. And in 2019, a European Geosciences Union award allowed me to tour peatland restoration in the highlands of Scotland—a landmark effort to mitigate climate change in the country.
